Context

The project HERMES aims at designing an advanced Multi-Energy System (MES), which smartly integrates reversible solid oxide high-temperature cells with up to 100% renewable energy power generators (e.g., PV panels, wind (micro-)turbines, etc.) and storage systems (i.e., fuel tanks, batteries, etc.).
The MES system is mainly oriented towards poly-generation uses where electricity can be either produced by renewable energy sources and rSOCs working as fuel cells, while providing heat and chilled water as well.
The main advancement with respect to the current state of the art is the integrated use of solid oxide cells for both power and hydrogen generation. Such a scheme is the paradigm of future integrated energy systems, featuring zero harmful emissions and carbon footprint, with capability of levelling discontinuous production of renewable energy systems while coping with dynamic power requests for flexible and smart grid implementation.
The project optimally integrates the considered components through experimental studies, simulation analysis and cyber physical approach. The sinergies between the various partners and their multidisciplinary already developed knowledge will be the driven factor for the success of the HERMES project. The existing collaboration among the partners were tied within Atena, a consortium aiming to promote and support industrial research and experimental development, whose UniPARTHENOPE, UniGE, UniTUS, UniPG e UniSA are already partners.
